the haven

A therapeutic alternative provision for the children of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk
Why choose the haven?

Our approach
The Haven embraces trauma-informed care as a cornerstone of our approach coupled with therapeutic wilderness therapy practices by a qualified therapist. Our therapeutic efforts are aimed at holistically supporting the young person on an individual basis, and by integrating trauma-informed care into our framework, we prioritize understanding the impact of past experiences and create a nurturing environment that promotes healing and resilience. Through this comprehensive approach, our goal is to enhance overall well-being and empower successful reengagement with education.

Why are we unique?
Our therapeutic provision unfolds amidst the natural setting of an 8-acre smallholding, complete with access to farm animals, allotments, a roundhouse and an outdoor kitchen.
This unique environment provides the space and resources necessary for children to flourish. Our interventions aim to enhance overall well-being and support the transition of children back into mainstream school.
Collaborating closely with the young person, we leverage the therapeutic benefits of nature and animal interaction to reduce inequality. Our approach is specifically designed to support children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We tailor our interventions to cater to their unique requirements, fostering their personal growth within a nurturing outdoor environment. Through this holistic approach, we empower young individuals to flourish academically and personally, ensuring they receive the specialized support they need to thrive.
Theoretic principles
As part of our therapeutic framework, we integrate attachment theory and trauma-informed approaches, acknowledging the profound impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on individual development. Understanding the significance of early relationships and experiences, we prioritize creating a secure and nurturing environment where children and young people feel safe to explore their emotions and build healthy connections.
We implement the principles of the three R’s – Regulation, Relational, and Resilience – to guide our interventions. By promoting emotional regulation, fostering positive relationships, and nurturing resilience, we support individuals in processing their traumatic experiences and developing coping strategies.
Additionally, we incorporate the principles of PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy) to cultivate an empathetic and understanding atmosphere where healing can occur at the individual’s own pace. Through these theories and practices, we strive to empower individuals to overcome adversity, strengthen their sense of self-worth, and thrive in their journey towards healing and growth.
